![]() Male Sexual Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation are two common types of male sexual dysfunction. These problems affect men at various ages. Sexual dysfunction is not a disease but can be a symptom of an underlying disease such as; diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low testosterone, neurological disease, medication, prostate disease etc. Sexual dysfunction often occurs as a result of relationship problems, anxiety, stress or lack of sleep. Despite the fact that these problems are very common, most men feel embarrassed about seeing their doctors about their problems. Often people feel unable to discuss a sexual condition with their family doctor usually because their doctors are not interested, appear too busy, or are not comfortable talking about sexual issues. Research has shown that nearly 9 out of 10 men with erectile dysfunction do not tell their GPs about the problem, and 6 out of 10 men do not even tell their partners. The Sexual Dysfunction Association Survey results indicate that men suffering with sexual conditions such as erectile dysfunction often suffer in other areas of their lives:
Erectile Dysfunction is Common
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual problem affecting men. Studies from many countries have shown that about 10% of the overall population suffer from it. The chance of having erectile dysfunction increases with age. A large American study called the Massachusetts Male Aging Study shows that amongst men aged between 40-70, 9.6% suffered from complete ED, 25.2% from moderate ED and 17.2% from minimal difficulty. The proportion of complete ED increases from 5.1% at age 40 to 15% at age 70. This study showed that ED is also more prevalent and increases with age amongst Asian populations. The rates of prevalence were 15.1% amongst 20-29 year olds , 29.6% amongst 30-39 year olds, 40.6% amongst 40-49 year olds, 54.3% amongst 50-59 year olds and 70.0% for the 60–69 year old age group.
