Protect Yourself Against Shingles!

17 Aug 2016

Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant (inactive) in the body. For reasons that are not fully known, the virus can reactivate years later, causing shingles.

The most common complication of shingles is severe pain where the shingles rash was. This pain can be debilitating. There is no treatment or cure from this pain. As people get older, they are more likely to develop long-term pain as a complication of shingles and the pain is likely to be more severe.

Herpes3

The shingles vaccine can reduce your risk of shingles and the longterm pain it can cause. This vaccine reduces the risk of developing shingles by 51% and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) by 67%. For people aged 50 or above, given in one dose as a shot, protect yourself against shingles!
